Even really old houses can become “smart.” Old House Expert Sara Thyselius explains how new technology saves energy in her 142-year-old log house.

“Unfortunately, the geothermal heat pump isn’t ‘smart’ in the sense that it has an internet connection; instead, it has been supplemented with a smart control unit from Ngenic Tune. The sensor is a small, unobtrusive box mounted on a wall in the house; it detects the indoor temperature and then controls the geothermal heat pump.”
